Ergonomic Recommendations and Injury Prevention
Ergonomics is about moving in a more efficient manner. As our society becomes increasingly mechanized, more and more people are suffering from repetitive strain injuries. From debilitating carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis, to the chronic neck or low back pain that everyone who works at a computer takes for granted, we are all showing the effects. Ergonomics will help you recognize your habits so you can stop doing them and recover a more natural, easy, and pleasant way of moving.
Therapeutic Stretching
Muscle stretching plays an
important role in massage therapy. The benefits of muscle stretching are
numerous. It can reduce the risk of muscle strain and joint sprain, reduce
muscle soreness and tension, optimize physical performance, promote body awareness and lower the risk of back problems.
Massage Therapy appears
to offer benefits identical or superior to those provided
by medical care, while reducing many of the costs and
procedures associated with the medical approach to
back and neck pain treatment.
Ear Acupuncture
Developed in the 1950’s, ear acupuncture has been proven to affect neural pathways, release endorphins, and induce pain relief. This therapy has been developed to treat conditions such as back pain, sciatica, constipation, weight control, stress management, shoulder pain, migraines, eyestrain, carpal tunnel, tendinitis, etc.The treatment involves taping a small metal bead covered in gold or silver behind the ear on the sensitive points, detectable with a pressure tester or using an electric detector. When the adhesive wears off, the therapist replaces the bead so that it is in the right spot at all times. In some cases the recipient is advised to press the bead several times a day for thirty seconds to provide even more “pressure” on the sensitive point until pain or discomfort disappears.
How stress affects you
One of the main contributors to our everyday stress
is our workplace. US Department of Labor estimates
that 100 million work days per year are lost due to
low back pain.
According to the Occupational Health and Safety News
and the National Council of Compensation Insurance:
- Stress accounts for over $30 billion in medical, disability and over $99 billion in productivity loss.
- 5% of employers reported high frequency illness in employees due to stress, and 85% of their employee accidents being stress related.
Prolonged sitting is associated with a long list of
problems. Reduced circulation due to immobility, means
less oxygen reaches the brain, leading to headaches,
poor circulation and fatigue. Pressure on the thighs
from a chair seat reduces blood flow and can lead to
swollen ankles and variscose veins. The C-curve, slouched
posture adopted by most sedentary workers puts uneven
posture on spinal disks, irritating spinal nerves and
causing low back pain, forward leaning head and over
60% of sedentary workers exhibit this tendency and
strain the juncture between the neck and upper spine.
Most companies contract with massage therapists who
schedule appointments with employees during breaks.
The recipient is seated in a specially designed chair
which allows the therapist to work on the back, neck,
shoulders and arms addressing the common problem areas
of today's workers. There is no oil used and the worker
is fully clothed. The massage session usually lasts
10 - 15 minutes but more time could be scheduled.
